What is Orofacial Myology?

Understanding the Role of Orofacial Myology in Modern Dental Care

At Specialist Dentistry Gold Coast, we are proud to offer comprehensive, specialised care that goes beyond just teeth. One such area of expertise that is gaining increasing recognition in the world of dental health is orofacial myology. But what exactly is orofacial myology, and why is it such a vital part of comprehensive dental and oral health treatment?

Let’s explore how orofacial myology supports patients with a variety of functional issues related to the face, mouth, and airway—and how Dr Alexander McDonald, our in-house orofacial myologist, plays a critical role in supporting patients’ overall well-being and long-term dental outcomes.

What is Orofacial Myology?

Orofacial myology is the assessment and treatment of the muscles of the face, mouth, and jaw, particularly as they relate to breathing, speech, chewing, swallowing, and overall orofacial posture.

In simple terms, it’s about how the muscles in the mouth and face work together and how dysfunction in these muscles can contribute to a range of health concerns, including orofacial pain including headaches, orthodontic relapse, poor sleep quality, and speech delays in children.

Orofacial myology therapy focuses on correcting oral habits and dysfunctional patterns such as:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Tongue thrust (including incorrect swallowing pattern)
  • Improper lip seal
  • Snoring and airway issues

By providing neuromuscular retraining of these muscles to function correctly, orofacial myology helps support proper facial development, correct breathing patterns, and long-term success in orthodontic and dental treatments.

When is Orofacial Myology Recommended?

You may consider referring a patient for orofacial myology assessment and therapy in the following situations:

1. Orthodontic

Orthodontic treatment outcomes are greatly impacted by the function of facial muscles. For example, a patient with a tongue thrust habit may experience relapse after braces if the underlying muscle patterns are not corrected. Orofacial myofunctional therapy can help to stabilise orthodontic results by addressing poor oral habits and guiding patients toward optimal function.

2. Mouth Breathing & Airway Concerns

Chronic mouth breathing can lead to altered facial growth, narrow palates, and compromised airway development, particularly in children. Early intervention through myofunctional therapy, often in conjunction with ENT and airway-focused dental care, can promote nasal breathing, better sleep, and healthier growth.

3. Speech or Swallowing Disorders

A low tongue posture or restricted tongue movement may contribute to lisping or inefficient swallowing patterns. In collaboration with speech pathologists, orofacial myologists can help improve tongue coordination, positioning, and mobility, leading to clearer speech and safer, more effective swallowing.

4. Thumb Sucking, Dummy Use, or Other Habits

Persistent oral habits can affect jaw development and teeth alignment. Orofacial myology offers gentle, positive reinforcement strategies to help children break these habits while also strengthening new muscle patterns to prevent recurrence.

5. Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ/TMD)

Some cases of TMJ dysfunction can be traced back to imbalanced muscle use, clenching, and postural issues. Myofunctional therapy can help reduce tension, improve posture, and support long-term relief.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

  • At Specialist Dentistry Gold Coast, we believe that collaboration is key to delivering exceptional outcomes for our patients. Orofacial myology doesn’t work in isolation—it complements and enhances other forms of dental and medical treatment. We encourage referrals from:
    • Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists
    • Speech Pathologists
    • Myobrace® or airway-focused clinics
    • Lactation consultants
    • Physiotherapists and chiropractors/osteopaths

When you refer your patients to Dr Alexander McDonald, you can rest assured they will receive detailed assessments, personalised therapy plans, and ongoing communication to keep you informed of their progress.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy typically includes:

  • Comprehensive assessment of muscle function, breathing, swallowing, and oral habits

  • Digital imaging or functional scans (if needed)

  • A series of customised exercises and habit retraining protocols

  • Education and coaching for long-term behaviour change

  • Coordination with other specialists as required

Patients may attend regular sessions over several weeks or months, depending on the complexity of their needs. The aim is not only to correct the issue at hand, but also to build long-term muscle memory and improve function.
